LED Lighting Facts

Overview
From 2009 to 2018, D+R International supported the development and implementation of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) LED Lighting Facts® program that showcased LED lamp and luminaire manufacturers who committed to testing products and reporting performance results according to industry standards. Designed to introduce transparency to the solid-state lighting (SSL) supply chain and help assure buyers that product performance claims were not exaggerated, the program evolved and expanded to keep pace with the changing needs of the industry in the dynamic SSL marketplace.

The Solution
A simple “truth-in-advertising” labeling program, LED Lighting Facts provided buyers with the assurance that the performance of their LED lighting products had been independently verified and that they had an information label and accessible online tool to compare LED lighting products and manufacturers. D+R created the LED Lighting Facts label, developed and maintained the website, implemented comprehensive program policies and procedures for listing products, processed manufacturer product submissions, and conducted verification testing protocols.
D+R created the LED Lighting Facts website platform for ease of use for manufacturers to submit and update products, as well as expanded access to the dataset of relevant product information for users who needed to evaluate products to select for their sales stock, project, or program. Additionally, D+R focused on aligning the program with recognized energy efficiency program sponsors and facilitating outreach and communications to retailer and distributor partners to encourage greater use of the program.

The Impact
LED Lighting Facts became recognized as a primary repository of accurate performance information for general illumination LED products, which DOE drew on to conduct analysis for their “Product Snapshot” reports for tracking changes in product performance over time. In its nearly 10 years of activity, the program listed more than 70,000 products and served more than 2,800 industry partners.
