Infographic: Insight Into EV Readiness Among Auto Dealerships

Accelerating EV Adoption: Are Auto Dealerships Ready?

At the beginning of 2021, D+R International researched and contacted auto dealers throughout parts of Southern Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. D+R found over 330 dealerships in the region selling 28 different car brands, with Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota as the most common dealership brands. Throughout this process, D+R spoke to managers, presidents, owners, and CEOs from 35 EV dealers and gained insight into EV readiness among auto dealerships in the region.

For many dealers, limited supply is still a barrier to increasing EV sales at the dealership. More than half of dealers had, on average, less than five EVs on their lot in a given day. Among these dealers, almost one third sold less than one EV per month on average. Dealers that had, on average, more than five EVs on their lot at a given time saw a subsequent increase in EV sales overall, although most of these dealers still did not sell through their stock.

Many respondents indicated that their staff had received training on EVs from the manufacturers. Cooperatives can engage with dealerships that are at all levels of EV readiness to supplement the resources they already have. Through engagement and education, dealerships and cooperatives can form mutually beneficial relationships and improve the quality of service and information that co-op members receive when shopping for an electric vehicle, and ultimately expanding EV adoption.
